So I found out about an Art Exhibit that would have gun photos in NYC of all places, the exhibit was part of the Asian Women Giving Circle’s Third Annual *Celebration of Arts and Activisim*. Sorta suprised, but with posters in the NYC subway featuring a young boy looking at a Ruger advertisment, even if it was for the William Eggleston’s exhibit, was quite surprising.
The Photographer is a female shooting enthusiast named Shin-Ae, and here are some low rent cellphone photo reproductions of her work that was on display. I was quite pleased to see some revolvers, being a wheel gun man myself. But I do have a soft spot for classic pistols.
This one is my favorite;

I like the contrast on this one;

This one is better in person;

I read once that photos of photos is an art unto itself, but I ain’t buyin’ it personally. I was hoping to meet Shin-Ae, but I was informed that she was not attending. Bummer. I would’ve like to have chatted about how people responded to her being a firearms owner, and artist. Seems to be quite rare to be both. It was interesting to see people actually stop and look, I mean really look, not just passing over. I was actually surprised to overhear someone explaining guns to fellow onlookers.
I forgot the name of Shin-Ae’s exhibit, but it was regarding self defense. There were also a few photo essay’s of her shooting at the range with her thoughts and views of self defense written along side.
Here’s what was written under one such photo essay;
In essence, what makes a good woman is the same as what makes a good man.
It is to be responsible.
Living by what is required of you vs. what is provided for you.
I don’t believe empowerment eclipses femininity.
There were other captions, but with low rent picture quality, I can’t make out the words.
But one paragraph struck a chord. She spoke about turning over our personal well being to others, and having others be responsible for ourselves, and our own welfare. Wish I could reproduce that here. Especially since many Courts have ruled that the Government has no duty to protect you. This is the very reason I own a gun btw.
Anyway, I hope to see more of her work someday.
UPDATE: The name of Shin-Ae’s exhibit is *Challenging Resistance*, and here’s the caption I was hoping to reproduce;

Wow. I am so pleased you came! Thank you! I was present and engaging in as many conversations as I could and it’s unfortunate that we didn’t meet. There were over 200 people that came through in less than 2 hours. Totally unexpected. Your comments are thoughtful and valuable. I am trying to get a bigger gallery to hang the whole show which is an ongoing project documenting women shooters. There are so many of us– really. I am going to post this exhibit online. Bite the bullet so to speak and come out of the analog closet to step up digitally. Again, thank you so much for coming. I hope we’ll have an opportunity to chat sometime. — Shin-Ae
I know Shin-Ae very well we used to shoot every Wednesday and Friday at the West Side Rifle and Pistol Range, there are many female shooters that attend, NY is not as bad as you would think. Her creativity is amazing an she is a great person and a great Artist. I can’t wait to see more of her work.
Shin Ae’s a natural shot–off either hand.
…Shooter at her side,
Dave
Yep, S’s exhibit was *great*. And in addition to the positive reception from many, it tweaked the nose of others who are only used to smelling NYC sensibilities. If they’d READ the exhibit, they would have seen themselves. One of the many things I liked about it was that you have to take a side. The text leaves you no choice. Either you’re complicit or you man-up. Simple enough, but it doesn’t leave the wiggle-room that some people demand, and that makes them cranky. To hell with the wigglers!

What a phenomenal exhibit. Thank you for sharing the highlights with those of us who weren’t able to see it in person. How extraordinary to have a women publicly heralded for her thoughts on responsibility and empowerment. I completely agree. http://tinyurl.com/dcpn6b and http://tinyurl.com/cysj5p
