Outlaw Category

Seems that the next new category in SASS could be Outlaw.  I was bummed when Frontier Cartridge Gunfighter didn’t make the cut this past December, but there’s a number of shoots that due recognize it.  And it seems that there are a few that recognize Outlaw as well.

What is Outlaw?  Well, Outlaw is shot either duelist, double duelist, or gunfighter, where revolvers and shotgun are fired, with no usage of sights, from anywhere between the chest and the hips.  Rifle is optional.

I got to give this category a try this past fall.  Was fun, and more challenging.  Plus, you have to be able to accept longer stage times, and more misses.  I heard that point shooting is a good way to practice for this category, and vice versa.

Not too many clubs allow this, due to safety.  Biggest issue is shots over the berm, and for some, the unfamiliar gun handling.

So come on, how much fun would that be, to shoot two revolvers, belchin’ hellfire and brimstone Outlaw style.  Just look at the photo above.

That’s fire coming out of the front and back of the cylinder, innit? Exciting…

    • You know it!!

Looks like a pair of Ruger Old Army’s filled to rim (35g to 40g of FFg wholly) with BOOM!!

      • Ian Argent says:

What are the odds of a cook-off in that situation? (Still, damn it looks cool)

      • *cook-off*? I’m not familiar with that term with regards to gunsmoke.

      • Ian Argent says:

        The non-ready rounds going off.

      • Oh, Chain Fire!

I’m told that if you have the right size ammo, you’re good to go. Plus a few darksider’s I met told me that when they go for the gold like the gentleman in the above photo, they use either cannon grade, Fg, or FFg, all for the hellfire and brimestone effect. Which equates into sooty guns, so they say to keep ‘em running, the slab on extra lube over the boolits in the chambers to reduce binding in the cylinder gap, and as a bonus, all that lube helps reduce the chance of a *cook off*.

As for sparks coming out of the nipple, and finding it’s way under a cap, and through another nipple, everybody says that’s a myth.

Everybody who gives me advice on wholly always finishes with *that’s my $.02. You’re mileage may vary*.
