My laptop died the other day. At first I thought it was a virus, but it turned out that the hardrive had a mechanical failure. Guess it was just old age.
I was able to get about 95% of what I wanted off it, before it would no longer allow me to do anything.
Spent a few days looking at new laptops, don’t have space to set up permanent reloading, let alone a desktop.
First stop was the MAC store in NYC at 5th Ave and 60th St. Found them to be very helpful. Since I have a few PC programs that only run on XP, it will be easy to run a parallel system.
Plus the idea of a 24hour MAC store is sorta interesting, I could go there at 2:30 in the morning for a new computer.
Then I spent some time looking at new regular PC’s. Wasn’t so impressed, the all felt cheap, and looked cheap. They didn’t seem to get interesting till I was over the $1k mark, plus, a $700 purchase can easily turn into a $1400 purchase when all is said and done.
The repair guy told me that for about $350 or so, I could get a new 250g hardrive, fully loaded, and get a boost to 2G of memory. He said everything else checked out, but after 4 years, I didn’t think putting money into it was a good idea.
So I juggled my finances, and went with the MacBook Pro.
Was gonna give my old laptop a viking funeral, but I decided to do the right thing and get it recycled.
Also, I purchased on the Jersey side of the crick so that none of my sales tax would not go toward Da Mayatolla (aka Mayor Michael Bloomberg).
