Cemetery's Gun Blob

Even with leever gunz you can get a kaboom that will ruin your day.  Not sure what happened here, but ultimately it was a slam fired out of batter discharge.  Sometimes you get a round that just won’t go into the chamber for whatever reason, or the case rim is too think to fit in the extractor (I have this problem from time to time with Starlight brass).  Word on the street is that this gun had the the spring around the firing pin shortened too much, so that extra jiggle, and a soft primer could put a damper on your day.

Now you might ask, why would you shorten that spring?  Well first you lighten the hammer spring, then you adjust this spring.  From what I gather, this is usually done when you use soft primers.  And since pistol caliber lever guns use just that, pistol caliber, there’s no reason to use a heavy spring which delivers the blow needs to set off a rifle caliber primer.  So you grind and smooth all that down till it’s slick as ice.

Now why would you need something as slick as ice?  Well, the main thing is that it makes using your rifle more enjoyable, and secondly, during speed based shoots, too much wiggle of working the lever disrupts the sight picture.  Constant sight acquisition is a time killer.
